Support to Political Parties, Coalitions and Independent Candidates

Donors are providing the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) with the facility to offer support to political parties, coalitions and independent candidates contesting the 15 May 2005 elections to the House of Federal Representatives.

Political Parties/Coalitions

The NEBE has established, with the agreement of donors, a formula for each political party/coalition to receive a cash-value allocation for goods and services related to election campaigning. Goods and services are purchased by the NEBE on behalf of the political parties/coalitions. The formula was announced to political parties/coalitions on 18 March 2005.

The cash-value allocation formula is:

An amount per candidate: A political party/coalition is allocated 3,460 Birr per candidate. A political party/coalition can receive a maximum of 259,500 Birr (i.e. 75 candidates).

Weighted Support for Political Parties/ Coalitions contesting more than one region: Each political party/coalition contesting two or more regions (with more than one candidate in each region) receives a cash-value allocation of 43,250 Birr per region contested.

Weighted Support for fielding Women Candidates: Each political party/coalition fielding a woman candidate will receive a cash value allocation of 2,160 Birr per woman candidate.

Any political party/coalition that has not so far taken up its allocation should telephone 09 429932 between the hours of 9am and 1pm, Monday to Friday.

Independent Candidates

Each independent candidate will receive a cash value allocation of 3,460 Birr for printing services to be provided by one of three printers appointed by the NEBE.

Independent candidates wishing to take up their cash value allocation should visit Office # 9 in Building C at the NEBE Headquarters in Addis Ababa between the hours of 9am and 1pm, Monday to Friday.

Any political party/coalition or independent candidate that does not take up its cash value allocation by 1pm on Friday April 29th 2005 will lose its allocation.
