Board
making preparations for student voting
in Jimma and Alemaya universities
17 May 2005
Election materials are being dispatched to polling stations
in Jimma and Alemaya universities where students were unable
to vote on May 15 due to logistical problems.
“The NEBE is dispatching the election materials as
per the lists of required ballot papers it had received
from the universities and the students will be able to vote
in the coming two days,” said Tesfaye Mengesha, Deputy
Head of the NEBE Secretariat.
The Secretariat has also been receiving reports about a
few polling stations in the country where voting did not
take place on May 15 for a variety of reasons, Tesfaye said.
Voting in these areas would also be conducted in a few days,
pending a decision by the Board.
“The Secretariat has begun receiving the results of
the polls in higher learning institutions in Addis Ababa
and expects to get constituency results as of tomorrow,
May 17,” he said. Provisional results will be made
public as soon as they arrive.
Tesfaye said Complaints Committees at polling station and
constituency levels have been receiving and deliberating
on complaints lodged by parties.
According to the NEBE complaints handling procedures, complaints
related to voting should be submitted to polling stations
within five hours of the problem. Complaints about counting
must be made to the constituency electoral office within
48 hours of the polling station results reaching the constituency
electoral office.
If the decisions given by polling stations and constituency
election offices are objected to, a further complaint can
be lodged with the NEBE. The NEBE’s decisions can
be appealed to the Federal High Court.
