Constituency Electoral Offices Announce Provisional Results Today

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia has announced that today is the deadline for provisional results for the 15 May 2005 elections to be posted at 524 Constituency Electoral Offices in the country except the Somali State. Elections in the 23 constituencies of the Somali State will be held on n15 August 2005.

Senior Expert of the Board’s Civic Education Department, Mekonnen Wondimu, said the Board headquarters in Addis Ababa has so far received 35 results from Constituency Electoral Offices.

“We are aware that candidates and the public are eagerly awaiting the full results and our staff will be working in the coming days to publicise them at central level,” said Mekonnen.

“We ask people to be patient and appreciate that delays are inevitable due to infrastructural and communication problems in the country. Constituency Electoral Offices have been instructed to deliver their results to the Board as soon as they can, by fax or in person.”

Of the provisional constituency results received, 19 are from Addis Ababa and 16 are from the regional states of Tigray, Oromia, SNNP and Amhara are posted at the Board’s headquarters. The NEBE Press Unit will continue posting provisional results as they arrive.

According to the timetable issued by the Board on 23 November 2005, the deadline for posting results at Constituency Election Offices is 21 May 2005.

Chairman of the NEWBE will announce official results on 8 June 2005.
