Three Major Parties Sign Declaration on NEBE Complaints
Investigation Process
11 June 2005
The United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF), Coalition
for Unity and Democracy (CUD) and the Ethiopian Peoples’
Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) signed yesterday
(10 June) a declaration on the National Electoral Board
of Ethiopia (NEBE) complaints review and investigation process.
The
signatories of the declaration have reaffirmed their commitment
to the successful and peaceful conclusion of the electoral
process in a manner that fully respects the wishes of the
people, the rule of law and constitutional processes of
the country.
They
also reasserted their condemnation of all acts of violence
or incitement to violence and agree to make all possible
efforts to prevent such acts, to exercise restraint and
seek resolution of all issues through legal and peaceful
means only.
The
parties have also agreed to accept and abide by the decisions
given by the NEBE and courts regarding complaints. They
shall refrain from all acts intended to subvert such decisions
without prejudice to their constitutional rights.
As agreed
in the meeting of the Joint Political Party Forum of 30
May 2005, the signatories of the declaration are committed
to participate fairly and constructively in the Complaints
Investigation Panels to be established by the NEBE.
The
signatories also request the NEBE to participate in hearings
to be held by the NEBE’s Complaints Review Body so
as to provide clarification of existing evidence and, where
appropriate to submit new evidence, prior to the final recommendations
of the Complaints Review Body.
NEBE
Chairman Kemal Bedri on the occasion expressed his conviction
that the parties would honor the declaration and work closely
with the Board.
Resident Ambassadors, representatives of the donor group
and international observers attended the event.
